Brown County showed signs of improvement Friday night, but fell in their effort to turn a winless season around against West Vigo.

Early on, the Eagles played like a different team from the one that lost its first two contests by a combined score of 96-28. And with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter, junior Konnor Graber ran into the endzone from 1 yard out, then drilled the extra point to give Brown County its first lead of the year, 7-0.

West Vigo answered quickly, however, tying the score at the 11:46 mark in the second on a 47-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lance Garrett to Chase Silcock.

Less than two minutes later, the Vikings hit the scoreboard again when Garrett kept the ball for himself and ran five yards for another touchdown.

Garrett completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Cody Thornton at the 8:05 mark of the fourth quarter that put the Vikings up 21-7 before Nathan Gregg, who was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra points, split the uprights with a 25-yard field goal that sealed the West Vigo win, 24-7.

The loss drops Brown County to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Western Indiana Conference action. The Eagles host South Vermillion next Friday night, September 10. The Wildcats are 0-3 as well, coming off a loss to Owen Valley Friday night.

Brown County dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 52-14 Western Indiana Conference loss Friday night to Owen Valley.

The Eagles scored both their touchdowns in the second quarter, but never saw the lead after the Patriots took an early 13-0 advantage.

The first Eagles score came on a 13-yard pass from Dillon Boknecht to Caleb Wedan. Konnor Graber’s extra point cut the Owen Valley lead to 13-7 with 4:27 left in the first half.

The Patriots answered by scoring again with less than a minute showing in the second period before Will Anderson hauled down a 12-yard Boknech pass and ran it in with 26.7 seconds left in the half.

Graber’s PAT narrowed the gap even further and the Patriots went to the locker room with only a 19-14 advantage over the Eagles.

But that would be the last Brown County saw of the endzone as Owen Valley scored twice more in the third and three times in the fourth to clinch the victory, their first in two games this year.

The Eagles continue their WIC schedule next Friday night, September 3, when they host West Vigo, the first Brown County game of the season at home.

The Vikings are 1-1, coming off a 15-13 win over Greencastle Friday night.

Brown County never recovered from a Cloverdale touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, dropping their 2010 varsity football season opener on the road, 44-14.

Donavan Scisney scored five touchdowns—including three in the first quarter—for the Clovers (1-9 last season), starting with a 74-yard run just 17 seconds in that put Cloverdale in front 7-0 with the extra point.

The home team stood on top 19-0 after the first period and 32-0 at the half. Two more TDs in the third gave them a whopping 44-0 advantage over the Eagles, who started the game short-handed as junior Konnor Graber (RB/LB) was sidelined this game for having been ejected from Brown County’s final contest of last season, and senior tackle Chadd Lowe sat out with an injury.

Brown County finally got on the board with 5:13 left in the game when junior Quincy Robinson hauled in a Dillon Boknecht pass in the endzone for an Eagles touchdown.

Just over three minutes later, Boknecht, a freshman, kept the ball after being unable to find an open receiver and ran 29 yards for Brown County’s second and final score of the game.

The loss is Brown County’s ninth in a row after winning their first two games of last season. The Eagles travel to Owen Valley next Friday, August 27, for a Western Indiana Conference match-up with the Patriots, who lost to South Putnam Friday night, 34-12. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
