There will be at least one service event every other week that junior high and high school students can get involved in. Everything will be here in Brown County.

This will be a way for our youth to get to know our community, bond with each other, serve and love others. This is not connected with the school or church, it is just a way for youth to serve each other here in Brown County.

“I am super excited about this, so let’s start spreading the word! Anyone can be involved, junior high and high school ages. If there is someone else interested, just let me know and we’ll see if we can work something out. If anyone has any service project ideas, please message me and let me know. Also message me, if you would like to get involved!!! Let’s get pumped to SERVE this summer!,” said Jessica Harding.

She may be contacted at jessierae110@gmail.com, by phone or text at 812-272-9287 or through Facebook.

When: ALL SUMMER

How it works: About every other week we will have a service project somewhere in Brown County. We will carpool and get everyone there that wants to come. This is not church affiliated…just a way for us to serve!

Why: To serve our own people without having to spend money

Income-eligible 7th and 8th graders who enroll in the program and fulfill a pledge of good citizenship are guaranteed to receive up to four years of undergraduate tuition at any participating public college or university in Indiana.

If students attend private or an independent institution, the state will award an amount comparable to that of a public institution. If you attend a participating proprietary (private career) school, the state will award a tuition scholarship equal to that of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

To be eligible for the program, a student must be a 7th or 8th grader in an Indiana public school or a private school accredited by the Indiana Department of Education, and must be a member of a household with an annual income that does not exceed the amount for the student to qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program, based on the previous tax year.

Eligible students can apply by completing an online form available at www.scholars.in.gov, or a paper application available through their junior high guidance office. If they are accepted into the program, they must honor a pledge of good citizenship, graduate from high school with a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and participate in college readiness programming coordinated through their regional Twenty-first Century Scholars Office. In addition, students who enroll in the program after June 30, 2011 must also qualify for state need-based aid upon high school graduation, in order to maintain Twenty-first Century Scholarship eligibility.

Chris Enstrom of the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program will be at the Brown County Junior High The deadline for applying for the 21st century program is June 30 of the 8th grade year! In an effort to increase the number of qualified students, BCJHS is hosting Chris Engstrom from IU on Friday May 18. The successful 21st century scholar can qualify for $50,000 to $100,000 in funds for post high school college or vocational school (many in state institutions qualify).

Mr. Enstrom will meet with 8th grade students in two sessions of 30 minutes in the cafeteria on Friday 5/18/12 as follows:

12:30-1:00 PM
Baughman
Greller
Pagnard
Thomas

1:00-1:30 PM
Roush
Bartels
Popplewell
McFall
Miller
Koopman

Mr. Enstrom will be available to work with parents and guardians from 1:30-2:30 PM. He will answer questions and assist with applications at that time.
